So I finally bypassed the mines and battled through the rest of the game to the evil General himself. I was expecting to have to a final showdown with Barrett first but the General helpfully shot Barrett dead saving me the trouble.
The General was a very powerful, nasty bugger but he still went down at the third attempt. The game ended with a cliff-hanger and a promise of the story being continued in the future, something I've looking forward to very much.
In the meantime one of the extras is a very nice play room with infinitely spawning enemies and infinite psi powers to destroy them with. A very nice way to release stress after a hard day at work.
